The Jiuzhaigou International Laboratory for Ecological, Environmental and Sustainable Development Research is an international research institution initiated jointly by Sichuan University, Jiuzhaigou Administration Bureau and University of California, and opens to scientists all over the world. It is part of the "985" program (Phase II) and "211" program of the Ministry of Education. Using sustainability science as the basic guidelines, The Laboratory will carry out multi-disciplinary, integrated studies incorporating natural, cultural and economic fields, aiming at solving problems between resource exploitation and environment protection, between economic development in areas of minority nationalities and social advance, and between natural conservation and tourism development. The current tasks are focused on impacts of tourism and global climate change on environment, natural resources and cultural resources, as well as responses of different ecosystems to anthropogenic and natural disturbance, so as to promote sustainable development in the world class tourism scenery under intensive tourism development. Main research areas at present include effects of natural and anthropogenic factors on changes in hydrology and water environment, ecological function and preservation of wetland developed on tufa, biodiversity conservation, anthropology, and development and marketing strategy of Jiuzhaigou.
