ABSTRACT
Real-time hybrid simulation combines physical testing and numerical simulation to enable the complete structural system to be considered in an experiment. It therefore provides a viable experimental technique for dynamic testing of structural systems to evaluate their performance and design methodology so as to achieve sustainability and resilience under earthquakes. Different challenges however need to be tackled to enable this advanced experiment technique to become a standard procedure for structural engineering research. This seminar presents the background of real-time hybrid simulation, previous and on-going research work on real-time hybrid simulation.
SHORT BIOGRAPHY
Dr. Cheng Chen is currently associate professor at San Francisco State University. He got his bachelor and master degree from Tongji University in 1999 and 2002, and Ph.D. degree from Lehigh University in 2007. From 2007 to 2009 he did post-doctoral study at the Network Earthquake Engineering Simulation (NEES) Lehigh Real-Time Multi-Directional (RTMD) Facility. He has been assistant professor at San Francisco State University between 2009 and 2015, and associate professor from 2015 to present. With research support from National Science Foundation (NSF) and other funding agencies, Dr. Chen has established achievements in structural dynamics, innovative seismic structural testing, structural control and reliability of real-time hybrid simulation. He has authored more than 60 publications. He is also member of American Society of Civil Engineers and American Institute of Steel Construction.
